Water filter installation and servicing

I bought water purification filters a year ago. Now they are offering me a service contract for the filters. Is this necessary?

Water purification filters are categorised as a suburban house, a complex engineering system. If water treatment equipment is not serviced in a timely manner, the likelihood of failure and further deterioration in the quality of water treatment increases significantly.

During operation, mechanical contamination in the water interferes with the normal operation of the filter and can cause more serious problems in the future. In addition, seasonal variations in the composition of the water quality, pressure fluctuations at the inlet of the system, exceeding the nominal capacity of the filters, and untimely replenishment of the materials used also affect the normal operation of the water treatment system. These problems can only be avoided by timely maintenance of the filters.

According to the recommendations of AQUAFILTER specialists, the optimum time interval between service visits is six months. Customers who have an annual service contract with our company are managed by a "personal" manager who notifies them of the next scheduled service and helps them with any issues that arise. We carry out maintenance at the customer's convenience, any day of the week, including Saturdays and Sundays.

Water treatment is an issue that arises naturally if the water flowing from a tap or borehole is cloudy, yellowish-brown in colour and has an odour. It is much more complicated when the water is completely "normal" by all accounts - as if there is no cause for concern. Meanwhile, global experience shows that the cost of water treatment is on average 5-7% of the value of a house. And this is no coincidence. Even outwardly good water can contain a "bouquet" of dissolved or undissolved impurities that make it unsafe to use. The quality of water can only be unequivocally judged by a full chemical analysis of the water. The problem is precisely solved by purification systems, in other words, water treatment systems.

It is essential to know exactly what the requirements are for a water filter system. Some solutions are only applicable if the water is used for domestic and household purposes. Others for drinking water problems. Our specialists need to know this information in order to make the right choice of water heating equipment. We pay particular attention to the hardness of the water, or rather the sometimes almost complete absence of it.
Although water is intended for domestic and household use, it must still meet the sanitary requirements for drinking water. Such water can already be called "normal", fit for use. It does not lead to rust marks or failure of sanitary equipment. Even if you drink a glass or two of this water, nothing will happen, but it is better to use water that has been purified to a higher level for drinking and cooking.

Unambiguously - from in-depth chemical analyses of water. Based on the results of this analysis and taking into account the criteria of the dwelling, we will be able to recommend a suitable water filtration system. We also recommend that you fill in request form and we'll coordinate the process for you.

It is generally believed that it is enough to clean the water of sand, turbidity and suspended particles, i.e. to make it clear and colourless, and the job is done. Some of our customers realise that this may not be enough, but they don't know what else can be done, or how to "catch" what doesn't float in the water. This is why people are sometimes surprised to learn that it is possible to remove invisible dissolved substances from water. Here are the main water nuisances that consumers face:

  • The presence of undissolved mechanical impurities, sand, suspended particles, rust as well as colloidal substances in the water. These tend to cause faster abrasive wear and contamination of sanitary equipment and pipes.
  • The hardness of water, which is determined by the amount of calcium and magnesium salts dissolved in the water. Increased levels can cause deposits and whitish marks on the surface of baths, sinks, etc. Calcium and magnesium salts, also known as hardness salts, are the cause of the well-known lime deposits.
  • Unpleasant taste, smell, shade of water. These three parameters, which are commonly referred to as organoleptic indicators, can be influenced by organic matter, residual chlorine and hydrogen sulphide in the water.
  • Bacterial pollution. This is caused by various microbes or bacteria in the water. Some of these can pose a direct threat to human health and life. Even seemingly harmless bacteria, in the course of their life process, give off organic substances that not only affect the organoleptic characteristics of the water, but also, through chemical reactions (e.g. with chlorine), can form poisonous or carcinogenic compounds.
  • The list below does not cover the full range of problems, but it gives you an idea of the main water problems experienced by consumers. The likelihood of encountering heavy metals, nitrates, pesticides, radionuclides, etc. in water is quite low, but should not be dismissed either.
    There are now a wide range of facilities that can treat virtually any quality of water to a level that meets the most stringent hygiene standards. The different types of plant differ both in their principle of operation and in their design. Mechanical, chemical, absorption and membrane treatment methods are the most common.

1-2 litres of water are needed for the chemical analysis. Plastic bottles can be used to fill the water. However, one thing to remember is that the bottle must be for drinking water and not for drinks containing sugar or flavourings. Before pouring the water into the bottle, the tap should be turned off and the water allowed to run for 10 to 15 minutes, after which it should be rinsed out of the prepared bottle and then filled up to the neck in a gentle stream, with a 'spill-over'. Care should be taken to avoid the formation of an air clog under the cap of the bottle. The container of water should then be placed in an opaque bag or wrapped in something else. This is done to prevent the water from being exposed to the sun. After these steps, we take the water to a special laboratory. It is preferable not to delay, as the sooner the water is in the hands of specialists, the more accurate the results will be. If this cannot be done in the next few hours, the container of water should be placed in a cool place. Typically, water is analysed for 15-20 indicators to get a complete picture of its composition. Express analyses based on 3-4 indicators, which are carried out by some companies, do not give a complete picture of the composition of the water and cannot be used as a basis for the design of water treatment schemes.

To answer this question, you need to know three main things:

The quality of the initial water entering your house. This is where a complete water analysis, carried out in a specialised laboratory or by a company professionally involved in the selection and installation of water purification systems for country houses, can help.

Specialists will take into account all the necessary parameters for selecting the equipment and assess your water for suitability for domestic use or drinking. In addition, in the company of true experts in their field, you will be reimbursed for the money spent on the analysis after the purchase of the equipment, and the results of the analysis of the treated water will be provided to you free of charge after the start-up of the system.

The amount of water required for consumption or the capacity of the system. In this case, it has to be understood that it is not so much the daily water consumption as the capacity of the water treatment system to treat the water at the time of maximum abstraction that is important for the selection of equipment. This is because water use is uneven. Typically, the morning and evening use is the highest, depending on the number of people living in the house and the water intake points (taps, etc.).

It is these maximum tests that filters have to cope with. Otherwise, some of the water will simply not be able to be purified and will not be fit for use. Interestingly, the requirements for technical water used for water heating and sanitary-technical equipment may be stricter than those for drinking water.

The type of water source (borehole, rural water supply, etc.), the characteristics of the room (area, humidity, etc.) and the periodicity of occupancy (seasonal, permanent) determine the specifics of the adaptation of the water system.

These and other questions can be answered by specialists who are professionally involved in water treatment.

Sometimes our experienced specialists are contacted by people who have bought water treatment systems from a non-specialist organisation: e.g. the filters were recommended and installed by the plumbers who installed the house's plumbing. However, residents are not satisfied with the quality of the filters. This is most often due to errors in the choice of equipment during the design phase. Errors can include:

Choosing a water treatment system without taking into account the chemical composition of the source water;

The analysis of the chemical composition of the water was carried out in a truncated way, excluding some of the indicators needed for a qualified selection of equipment;

Unprofessional analysis of the chemical composition of water, which produces inaccurate results - this is the kind of work that is carried out by people with little experience or poor knowledge of water treatment companies;

Incorrect calculation of the required capacity of the water treatment system, leading to maximum, intermittent water ingress of pollutants.

Improper selection of the water treatment system can lead to malfunctions in the existing water supply branch (sewer). If water containing potassium permanganate solution or other oxidising agents enters the aeration treatment system or the septic tank after regeneration washing of the filters, this will kill the micro-organisms that are responsible for the biological process of waste water treatment. In the case of a septic tank designed for a certain number of effluents, an 'excess' amount of washing water (above the calculated volume) may lead to the effluent being forced out of the treatment plant, to the clogging of the subsequent treatment stages (if any) or to the rotting of the effluent, and to the development of a disagreeable odour later.

At first glance, the installation requirements for rooms are minimal, but in practice there are often situations where problems with the room have to be solved during the installation process. Let's start with the necessary requirements:

  • The air temperature in the room must be above 5ºC;
  • The room must be supplied with electricity (220V);
  • The room must have a water inlet;
  • The room must have a sewerage outlet;
  • The installation area varies between 0.5 and 2.0 m2.
  • In addition to these requirements, the following details must be taken into account:
  • Type and size of sewers;
  • Power outages (if any);
  • House water supply system pressure.

These are by no means all the issues that our specialists discuss with our clients. Sometimes even the dimensions of doorways, staircases, and especially stairwells and hatches (in the case of crawl spaces) need to be specified in advance. We have encountered situations where the purchased equipment does not fit in the installation room. To avoid potential problems, it is better to contact our specialists in advance and schedule a time to inspect your premises.

If you have a water treatment system in your country house that does its job well, and if the water that comes out meets the drinking water standards, it can be used for both technical and drinking purposes. However, the appropriateness of installing an additional treatment system in the kitchen may be determined by the following factors. Fluoride and nitrate can be detected in artesian and well water, along with other contaminants that are not removed by the main water treatment equipment during filtration. Only reverse osmosis units can be used here. Such units remove all or part of the salts from the water. The water is not "dead" after treatment in a domestic system, but only partially "desalinated", making it ideal for drinking or cooking. Humans get most of their minerals and trace elements from food and not from water. Therefore, installing an additional drinking water filter under the sink makes logical and sensible sense, and is a must for connoisseurs of good tasting coffee or tea.

Water treatment is an issue that arises naturally if the water flowing from a tap or borehole is cloudy, yellowish-brown in colour and has an odour. It is much more complicated when the water is completely "normal" by all accounts - as if there is no cause for concern. Even outwardly good water can contain a mixture of dissolved and undissolved impurities that make it unsafe to use.

According to the World Health Organisation, 80% of illnesses on the planet are linked to poor-quality drinking water.

Few people know that:

  • Sand, clay and mineral particles in the water cause faults in household appliances and plumbing equipment and reduce water pressure in the water supply.
  • prolonged consumption of water with high iron content causes liver disease, increases the risk of heart attacks and has a negative impact on the reproductive system. As a result of oxidation processes and the vital activity of iron bacteria, water pipes can completely "grow back" in a matter of months.
  • constant consumption of water with high hardness is a cause of salt accumulation in the body, eventually leading to joint diseases (arthritis, polyarthritis), and the formation of stones in the kidneys, gall bladder and bladder. Increased water hardness leads to an intense build-up of sediment in the plumbing system and on sanitary fixtures, which interferes with the normal functioning of household appliances.
  • In addition to chemical pollutants in water, there are also biological pollutants that cause different human diseases.

Water quality can only be judged unequivocally by a full chemical analysis of the water. Water treatment systems are the perfect solution.
